Transplantation and ex vivo modeling

The team of Marten Engelse conducts translational research that focuses on automating and scaling up β-cell replacement therapies for type 1 diabetes. The team has developed cleanroom-based processes to isolate human islets from donor pancreases. Recently, this labor-intensive task has been automated with the PancReatic Islet Separation Method (PRISM), ensuring efficiency, consistency, and high yield for donor islet isolations.
