De Koning lab

Clinical application of new treatments

The team of Eelco de Koning is a mixture of translational and clinical researchers, with the focus being on restoring insulin production in T1D patients through beta cell replacement therapy. In 2006, the national donor islet transplantation program was established, which includes both allogeneic and autologous approaches. The team is now also involved in the development of novel beta cell replacement therapies using stem cell-derived islets. In addition, the team conducts several (pre)clinical studies that aim to improve T1D patients’ lives, including the Vertex trial with a stem cell-derived islet cell therapy product.

The team is part of the RegMedXB, H2020 ISLET and reNEW consortia.
