Eelco de Koning is Professor of Diabetology and an internist-endocrinologist at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). He studied medicine at Utrecht University. After conducting research in Oxford and Boston on islet pathology, function, and transplantation, he established an islet transplantation program at the LUMC in 2007. His research focuses on fundamental human islet biology, islet function, and transplantation of stem cell–derived islets, with the goal of achieving a functional cure for people with type 1 diabetes. Starting in 2025, he will lead Cure One to further accelerate these innovations.
